What is a G card exam?

G card exam means an exam that needs to be given to become a โ€œG-card custom pass holderโ€ as per Regulation 13 of Customs Broker Licensing Regulations,2018. A G Cardholder is a person who has passed the examination as per regulation 12 of CBLR, 2018 and has been issued a photo identity card in FORM G. Such G-card holders are authorized to work in the customs area on behalf of a customs broker/F card holder for transacting business in the customs area and to do the import/export clearance work.

What are the benefits of acquiring a G-card?

People do appear and clear the G card exam as there are numerous benefits OR pros that come with it like โ€“

  1. A G-card holder gives you status in the industry or while working in the customs area. You are seen as a knowledgeable person and as someone who knows the know-how of customs clearance work.
  2. You can also be authorized by a customs broker or an F-card holder to sign important customs documents on their behalf. This benefit is not given to an H-card holder.
  3. You get higher pay as compared to other employees or H-card holders.
  4. The minimum qualification needed is just 10+2 to appear for the exam.
  5. If you do not clear the G-card exam, you still get an H-card.
  6. If you are not a graduate and do not hold a professional degree, you can appear for the G-card exam and once you become a G-card holder, work for 2 years in customs and you automatically become eligible for the F-card exam which means you can become a customs broker yourself.

The only con is that you have to be an H card holder before applying for a G card exam. Other than that, there are no cons as such to appearing for the G-card exam. No knowledge is wasted and what worst could happen is you wonโ€™t get a G-card, but you will definitely earn an H-card customs pass.

How to apply for a G card exam?

Below are the steps to apply for the G card exam โ€“

  1. Check your Eligibility โ€“ You should be 10+2 and should be working with a customs broker for at least a year. You should also hold an H-card. We have mentioned the eligibility criteria below in this article for your reference.
  2. Check Notification โ€“ Every year the government issues a notification or a public notice announcing the date of the application submissions, the date of the exam, etc. This step is important because it might happen that the government includes new criteria or changes certain patterns. During the Covid-19 period, there were no notifications issued, so the exam was not held for over 2 years. So it is very important to check all these aspects before even starting to prepare for the exam.
  3. Prepare Application โ€“ Fill in your application form for the G card (it is given below in this article), and prepare a set of documents that are needed to be submitted in as per the notice/notification given. Make sure all documents are well attached before submission, so no deficiency is received as an application is also counted as an attempt made. For Mumbai customs, the documents are not many as they have started online applications for G card exam on CBLMS Portal. Please check the notification at the next point.
  4. Submit the Application โ€“ Submission of the application should be done within the time period mentioned in the public notice/notification. Otherwise, the application is just not acceptable. It is usually submitted to the customs house in your city in person. However, Mumbai customs has started online applications this year which is 2024. Read here to know more on the same
  5. Wait for the selection list โ€“ Once your application is submitted, customs will release a list of candidates selected for written examination on the basis of applications submitted. If your name appears in the list you are selected. If not, then your application might have a deficiency meaning that one or more documents must be missing or not valid or verified.

How many attempts are allowed for the G-card exam?

A candidate can appear for G-card 4 times which means the G-card exam has 4 attempts. After that, you are not eligible for the exam. If you remain absent for the written exam, it is still counted as an attempt made.
